Soldiers on Sunday reportedly killed Nemesio Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who was considered one of the most wanted men in both Mexico and the United States, according to several media outlets.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Mexican government regarding Oseguera’s death. The cartel leader nicknamed “El Mencho,” had a $15 million bounty on his head.
Oseguera is among the most significant drug suspects to be taken down since the capture of the Sinaloa cartel’s founders, Joaquin Guzman ‘El Chapo’ and Ismael Zambada, both of whom are serving prison sentences in the United States.
The reported killing was covered by major Mexican media, including El Universal, Reforma, and the Televisa network.
Ahead of the operation, armed individuals set cars and trucks ablaze in Jalisco, blocking multiple roads to impede police access. This tactic is commonly used to slow authorities from reaching high-value targets.
The unrest spread to the neighboring state of Michoacan, where Oseguera’s cartel also maintains a strong presence.
Formed in 2009, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel quickly became one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking organizations, according to the US Justice Department. US authorities have formally classified it as a terrorist organization, citing its role in transporting cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl from Mexico into the United States.
