
A US Africa Command (AFRICOM) delegation met with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026,
According to a press statement signed by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media and Advocacy NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja. the discussion was an enhanced collaboration and partnership in the fight against illicit drugs. The delegation, led by Philip Esch, US Drug Enforcement Administration Liaison to AFRICOM, commended the existing relationship between NDLEA and AFRICOM, assuring continued support and partnership. “the NDLEA and US-DEA is not only a partnership but highly important to the US government.” He said.

Esch highlighted the importance of the NDLEA-US-DEA partnership, praising Marwa’s leadership and openness to international cooperation. In his words “We appreciate all the support and leadership you provide,” Esch expressed enthusiasm for continued engagement, especially given Marwa’s renewed tenure

It was also disclosed that another delegation member, James Elseth, lauded NDLEA’s tremendous work in Nigeria as well as it’s regional and international approach, saying, “You have a regional mindset and an international mindset, showing clearly in the scope and impact of your work.” Elseth also commended NDLEA’s maintenance of US-provided equipment and announced two major support projects in the works.

Although Marwa expressed gratitude for US-AFRICOM’s support, acknowledging the role of international partners and President Bola Tinubu’s administration in NDLEA’s achievements, he requested continued support, citing the nexus between illicit drugs and terrorism, and seeking assistance with scanning equipment, digital forensic tools, and sniffer dogs, among others.
