Four police officers in Lagos have been arrested and detained for allegedly extorting money from a highly placed individual.
It was reported that unknown to the officers, the individual involved was later identified as the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.
According to reliable security sources familiar with the incident, the officers had no idea who the victim was at the time of the encounter.
It was disclosed that the incident occurred in Lagos during a routine stop-and-search operation. The officers reportedly flagged down the vehicle conveying the ICPC Chairman and allegedly demanded money from him.
Unknowing to the operatives, the man they were extorting is the head of one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agencies.
After realizing the identity of the individual, a report was made to higher authorities, leading to the immediate arrest of the four officers involved.
ICPC Extortion Case: Police Probe Continues
Confirming the development, a source said the officers are currently in custody of the police while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, “disciplinary procedures have commenced while Investigations are still ongoing to establish all the facts, “the source stated.

The arrest has sparked conversations and mixed reactions about police conduct and extortion on Lagos roads, with observers noting the irony that the victim of the alleged extortion leads the agency saddled with the responsibility of fighting corruption in public offices.
The ICPC, established in 2000 to prohibit and punish corruption and other related offences is the apex of the country’s anti corruption agency. The agency is yet to issue an official statement on the matter as of press time.
The Nigeria Police Force is also expected to make a formal pronouncement after investigations are concluded. If found culpable, the officers could face dismissal and prosecution in line with police regulations and extant laws. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
